Public trust in charities at ten-year high, new research shows

The Charity Commission, the regulator of charities in England and Wales, has published fresh research that shows public trust in charities at highest level since 2014.

The research reveals that information about how money is spent by a charity is the single most important factor for most people. This is followed closely by knowing that the charity achieves its purpose, that it makes a difference and that it operates to high ethical standards.

Third of charities expect finances to deteriorate over autumn, research reveals

Researchers have found that around a third of charities expect their finances to deteriorate in the coming months while a further third expect their resources to stagnate.

Pro Bono Economics (PBE) and Nottingham Trent University’s VCSE Data and Insights National Observatory report warns that deep-rooted challenges of financial instability, skills gaps and rising demand are affecting charities’ ability to support people most in need.

It says that most charities expect demand for their services to increase over the autumn, while many face recruitment difficulties and have asked staff to work increased hours.

How charities can tackle misinformation

Misinformation and disinformation often spread through social media. It includes inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or false information as well as selective or half-truths. Charities rely on public trust and accurate information to carry out our work effectively. Ensuring the accuracy of the information we share, and countering misinformation, is crucial. Understanding how misinformation spreads and the steps we can take to mitigate its effects is vital. NCVO have produced some tips charities can use to tackle this issue.

The youth mental health crisis

Young people’s mental health is facing an unprecedented storm of pressures and crises, with charities often providing vital shelter. With demand for NHS mental health services at record highs and waiting times for NHS treatment varying significantly across the UK, children and young people are increasingly being left at the mercy of the postcode lottery. For those left behind, charities provide a vital lifeline.

How are charities responding to the rising mental health needs of children and young people? And how can funders better support the charity sector as it grapples with unprecedented demand?

This paper aims to chart the current landscape by exploring these questions and providing some answers.
