Second public consultation launched on Martyn’s Law

The Home Office has launched a public consultation on the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, also known as Martyn's Law.

Following the announcement of this legislation in the King’s Speech, the government has committed to a further public consultation on Standard Tier premises (defined as premises which have a capacity of 100-799 individuals) to ensure the public and those impacted by the proposals have the opportunity to offer in-depth views prior to the legislation's introduction to Parliament.

The Home Office particularly welcomes views on this consultation from those responsible for the smaller premises which would fall within the Standard Tier, especially those in the community and voluntary sector. Find out more about the organisations who fall under these premises on the consultation webpage.

VAT relief changes on certain energy-saving materials for charitable buildings

Did you know that the government has recently removed VAT on the installation of certain energy-saving materials for buildings used solely for a relevant charitable purpose?

This means that the next time you are getting a qualifying energy saving building upgrade, the builder/installer will not charge VAT on the price.

Going Green - Online conference

Thursday 21 March | 10:00am-3:30pm

The urgency of climate change continues, with the impact of severe temperatures and extreme weather events being felt more than ever in the UK and even more so overseas. The importance of the conversation around sustainability and what charities are doing continues to be vital.

We know it’s difficult to commit time, resources, and effort to improve your climate impact, especially with the financial strain the sector is under. But it is a necessary journey for all of us, and time is of the essence. Join the Directory of Social Change for a second year as we continue to discuss what we can do, how we go about it and how we embed this within our organisational cultures. We all have a role to play, no matter where we are on the journey.

Event sessions cover:

  • Writing an environmental policy
  • Understanding what funders look for in sustainability
  • Going green when you are a small charity
  • Learning from corporate sustainability best practices
  • Panel discussion on ESG (environmental, social, governance) reporting
  • Keynote that will discuss the continuing need to incorporate sustainability in all we do

The General Election Budget of 2024

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, delivered the final Spring Budget before the upcoming election. Here's how it will impact the charity sector.

Charities respond to spring budget

Civil society organisations have reacted to Jeremy Hunt's latest spring budget, with several groups lamenting a lack of measures to help the charity sector. The chancellor recently outlined the government's tax and spending plans, including a further cut to National Insurance, an increase in the VAT registration threshold, and protections for charities claiming gift aid. Hunt announced more funding for medical research charities, the National Theatre and more than £1bn in additional tax relief for creative industries over the next five years.

Charity sector bodies urged to provide more leadership on AI

During the Charity Commission's strategy launch on Monday 26 February, a group of panellists from around the sector discussed the spread of misinformation, and what charities need to be doing to safeguard themselves.
