Chesterfield Borough Council

The Chesterfield Equality & Diversity Forum would like to arrange a Five Senses Disability Awareness event for the local community.

The aim of the event will be to increase understanding and empathy for individuals with sensory disabilities, by engaging participants in activities that simulate or highlight the challenges and experiences of those with sensory impairments. These activities could be tailored to specific senses (e.g. wearing glasses simulating different visual impairments, or a sound-dampening activity to simulate hearing loss) or incorporate all five senses.

Some key outcomes and benefits we would like to achieve from this event include:

·        Increased Empathy:

By temporarily experiencing sensory limitations, participants can gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with sensory disabilities.

·        Improved Awareness:

The event can highlight the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in various settings (e.g., public spaces, workplaces, and social gatherings).

·        Positive Attitudes:

By promoting understanding and empathy, the event can contribute to a more inclusive and accepting attitude towards people with disabilities.

  • Education:

We would like the event to incorporate educational elements, such as information about different sensory disabilities, assistive technologies, and available resources.

We are looking to hold the event on Friday 28th November at the Town Hall in Chesterfield, exact times to be confirmed.

If you work or volunteer within a setting that supports people with sensory disabilities / additional requirements and think you would like to take part in this event by bringing along an activity or resources, the forum would love to hear from you.

Please drop me an email to let me know how your service will be able to contribute and whether you would be available on Friday 28th November for the event.  We will then arrange a planning meeting to move the event forward.

Any queries please let me know

Best wishes
